Before their audience, the scandinavians have not given in and won their first match against the favourites of the pool: Italy. It is an important success because now Sweden are in an excellent position to be qualified for the Rugby World Cup 2010. For Italy, this defeat is on the other hand very problematic. They must imperatively win their next two games while hoping for a bad result of their opponents of the day.

Three other matches have been played today: Scotland, Netherlands and Spain, the other favourites, won easily respectively against Russia, Belgium and Germany.
